As the owner of Purrfect Pet Sitting, I believe customers deserve honest, transparent pricing. That’s why I was surprised when I recently received a quote from a cleaning service that included a mandatory 20% tip and a $30 liability insurance fee.
If a tip is mandatory, is it really a tip?
Traditionally, a tip is something a customer chooses to give for exceptional service. When it’s automatically added and required, it stops being a gratuity and becomes part of the cost of the service. If a business needs to charge more to fairly compensate its employees, that’s understandable. But those costs should be reflected in the advertised price.
The same applies to liability insurance. Insurance is an essential part of running any professional service business. Along with payroll, licensing, vehicles, equipment, and other overhead expenses, it’s generally considered a cost of doing business.
The Insurance Fee Question 🤔
The $30 liability insurance charge raised even more questions for me.
Liability insurance is an important part of running any professional service business. It protects both the company and the customer if something goes wrong. Like payroll, licensing, equipment, and vehicle expenses, it’s generally considered a normal cost of doing business.
But when a company charges every customer a separate $30 insurance fee, on every invoice, it’s fair to ask:
Is the fee simply covering insurance costs, or is it generating additional profit?
Without knowing the company’s actual insurance expenses, nobody can say for certain. But it’s a reasonable question when the fee is charged separately on every invoice.
At Purrfect Pet Sitting, we take a different approach. We believe in straightforward pricing with no hidden surprises. The price we quote is the price you can expect to pay. If our costs increase, we adjust our rates accordingly rather than adding fee after fee to an invoice.
Customers aren’t opposed to paying fair prices. What they want is transparency.
A mandatory tip isn’t really a tip. Liability insurance isn’t an optional add-on. They’re business costs, and customers deserve to know the true price upfront.
Honest pricing builds trust, and trust is the foundation of every successful service business. 🐱❤️🐶
