I’m surprised at the number of phone calls we get from people wanting to drop their dogs (or cats) off at my house for boarding. Our website and voicemail clearly state we do “in YOUR home pet care”, but yet they still contact us.
Why DON’T we do boarding?
It’s easy money, right?
First and foremost, my home is my castle.
I don’t want to bring work home with me. We have our own pets; 2 dogs, 3 cats and 11 chickens to be exact. I don’t want or need anymore pets in my house! When I’m done with pet sitting for the day I want to come home and relax.
Second, it’s not LEGAL for me to do so!
I cringe when I see listings on the major .com pet sitting websites offering in home boarding. The vast majority of the people on there are boarding illegally and they don’t even realize it. Why? Because they live in an area not zoned for that type of service and they are not charging sales tax on the service (in NY, pet care is a taxable service).
Is YOUR neighborhood zoned for commercial business?
In some areas you could operate as a legitimate business if you apply for and are granted a variance from your town/city.
How many dogs can you legally have in your home is another issue? Where I live, it’s three. I see some people posting on social media that they are boarding upwards of 20 dogs at a time in their home! I’m sorry, that is an accident waiting to happen.
Many don’t even require a trial run to make sure the dog will get along with any other dogs or pets in the home or other guest dogs.
